Shoulder pain is common and it's estimated that 1 in 4 people in the UK are currently complaining about their shoulder - if you're one of them then stay on this page a while and let's see if I can offer you some help! Shoulder pain can start due to poor posture, trauma, repetitive actions over the years, a combination of all, or sometimes a more specific condition such as a frozen shoulder (read more about frozen shoulders here). The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and plays a big role in our daily activities which is why when pain develops it can be very frustrating. A lot of the time symptoms develop on your dominant side just to add to the fun.

When left untreated shoulder problems can start to affect how you move e.g. reaching into cupboards, how you wash and dress, driving, lifting and how you sleep. As well as limiting your activity you may also feel the shoulder becomes weak, stiff and of course it can be very painful. A lot of people tend to believe that their shoulder pain will settle with time or may have even accepted it as something they now have to live with - both of these beliefs are often false and usually lead to the worsening of your symptoms.

You often need to take action for symptoms to improve and today can be the day. I have seen many people who have gone to see their GP for some advice and have been prescribed painkillers and told to "wait and see" how things go. This is rarely enough. It much better to identify the source of the problem and put a plan in place to improve pain and prevent the return of symptoms in the future.

If you're ready to receive some advice specific for your problem, please feel free to schedule a call today - you can talk to our physiotherapist about your problems to learn the right steps to take. The phone call is complimentary and there's no obligation to book any appointments once our conversation is over. Our goal is to help you make the right decision about what to do next for your shoulder pain.

It’s important to know the cause of your symptoms and following a detailed assessment which includes questioning and a physical examination physiotherapists are often able to diagnose the problem without the need for further investigation.

The majority of shoulder pain involves your rotator cuff muscles - important muscles around the shoulder that provide both stability and movement. Over time these muscles can struggle to perform and they start to lack the strength and capacity that is required to carry out daily tasks. With muscles/tendons being the main issue, Physio At The Door is well placed to teach you the right exercises (that are easy to do at home) to improve strength and relieve pain. The right exercises sometimes have the ability to improve painful movement within one session - although they will need to be performed for a few weeks at least to fully resolve your symptoms.

Here's a few easy steps to follow to help you achieve your goal of getting rid of your shoulder pain:

  • Make a decision to get some help. Procrastination never helps anything.

  • Get some proper advice. You may need to make some changes at work/home to avoid aggravating your pain.

  • Sleep in a better position. Waking up with pain? Try sleeping on your other side/back for a while.

  • Do the right exercises and get some hands-on physiotherapy. Proven to work.

Physio At The Door can help to:

  • Diagnose the cause of symptoms

  • Educate you on how to avoid ongoing aggravation and how to reduce pain

  • Teach specific (and safe) exercise that improves shoulder movement, strength and pain

  • Provide manual therapy or acupuncture when indicated that improves shoulder movement and pain

  • Provide management strategies to prevent recurrent problems in the future

If you would like to find out first hand how Physio At The Door can help you then I invite you to sign up for a free Discovery Visit. This is something I offer to people who are a bit nervous, sceptical and unsure about physiotherapy and what it can do for them. It's a risk free appointment where I'll come and perform an assessment and identify why you have shoulder pain and suggest what you should do to improve things.

Physio At The Door is designed to make your life easy. You can start that journey today by arranging a call, sending an e-mail or signing up for a discovery visit. An easier life is one where you have much less shoulder pain. If you want to stop relying on painkillers, get a good night's sleep, stay out of the doctors office and return to an active lifestyle - contact today!
